In honor of the Oakland Museum’s upcoming wild and wonderful White Elephant Sale – here’s one from the archives. It’s that wacky and wonderful time of the year again – the time when treasure hunters and donors alike line up in the cool morning hours to snatch the one thing they don’t have that they didn’t know that they needed or wanted. The Oakland Museum’s White Elephant Sale (WES) has already opened its doors these past few weeks for the savvy donors who have learned how to skip the arduously long lines by donating goods and receiving a donor pass that grants them early access.
With a donor pass, you can wander the aisles between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on select days prior to the warehouse doors being flung open to the general public. Trust me, this is the way to do the White Elephant Sale. You’ll skip the hordes of people and the lines will be quite a bit lighter. Plus, you’ll catch a glimpse of the good stuff before it gets carted away by someone else. Unfortunately, the elephants are not for sale and must stay in the room.
I happened upon this light fixture that must have been in a church. Why didn’t I ask the nice volunteers from whence it came? I suppose I was caught up in the moment of the find and forgot. But it now adorns our cross wall in our den. I love the ambient light it provides and I adore the price: $25!
Here’s a snippet of some of the other interesting tid bits that I feasted my eyes upon while at the Sale. If you hurry, you may still be able to grab ’em!
And, just in case you’re getting ready to tie the knot, check out the Bridal section with lots of lovely vintage and newer bridal gowns complete with photos of some of the folks who wore them at their wedding…
Then, on a completely different note, in case you have a western theme going at your house, you can find an antique horse and cart. It would make a lovely children’s toy for those of you with little ones once it was dusted off and cleaned up a little.
It may be a little cold out now, but come Spring and Summer, you’ll be glad you grabbed these sweet little ice cream parlor chairs with their pristine blue cushions.
There are so many great finds at the White Elephant Sale that it is truly like visiting 10 great thrift stores all in one place. I could spend hours uploading photos for you to gaze upon, but it’s best if you just get in your car and point it in the direction of the White Elephant Sale March 1st and 2nd! Here’s a little something to whet your whistle until the actual sale begins – this video created by Set of Drifters tells it all!
